AI Governance

ISO/IEC 42001 is the first international standard for the responsible governance of artificial intelligence within organizations — covering how AI systems are developed, deployed, monitored and controlled, independent of any single AI technology. It arrives as the EU AI Act moves from adopted legislation to operational obligation, giving organizations a management-system answer to a fast-moving regulatory question.

Why this matters for your organization

Board & executive leadership

Any organization now deploying AI — whether building it or simply using third-party AI tools in its operations — has to be able to account for how that use is governed. Boards are increasingly asked this question directly, by regulators and by clients, well before formal enforcement begins.

Risk, compliance & data protection functions

For compliance and risk functions, an AIMS built on ISO/IEC 42001 gives a structured way to classify AI use cases by risk, ahead of the AI Act’s own risk-tiered obligations — turning a moving legislative target into a manageable internal process.

Operational & technical specialists

For the teams building or integrating AI systems, ISO/IEC 42001 provides concrete operational requirements — documentation, monitoring, human oversight — rather than leaving “responsible AI” as an abstract principle without a checklist.
